Hall diary

19th Moved forward 3 miles and found the enemy in their Forts in rear of the city of Vicksburg. about noon our Division made a charge over the hills and ravines and got a position about 400 yds from two of their large Forts. the Iron and lead fell pretty thick while we was getting our position. we held it until the 23rd when we were relieved by one Brigade of Hovey's Division. we staid here until the 8th of June. Skirmishing most every day. a disastrous charge was made on the 22nd May.
June 8th Moved to Black river Bridge 12 miles.
" Moved to Camp Alice near Bovinia Station. camp very nice. had to carry water 3/4 of a mile.
" 26th Received two months Pay.
July 4th Genl. Pemberton surrendered the city of Vicks burg and all his force mounting to about 30000 Prisoners. a large lot of arms (unreadable). The Prisoners
