followed them as far as Edwards Depot where we retire until morning.
17th Resumed the pursuit at day-light arriving near Black river Bridge about 9 A.M. where we found the rebs inside their breastworks on both sides of the Rail Road. Osterhaus Division was 1st Brig to the right 2nd Brigade on the left of the Rail road. Carr on the right of Osterhaus. after a fight of 2 1/2 hours we charged on and drove them across the river. Captured 2500 prisoners 17 Cannon & 3 stand of colors. they set the Bridge on fire after crossing. Our Pioneers build a bridge to night. the number of Prisoners taken at Champion Hills was 1500 and two field Batteries. the distance from Raymond to Black river is 24 miles.
18th Crossed the river at 8 A.M. and marched 8 miles & camped
