Page 40 - May 15 to May 16, 1863

Hall diary

15th Left Raymond and march towards Bolton Station. got within 3/4 of a mile and found Hoveys and Crocker Divs on that road going west so we turned back. went three miles and took another road to Edwards Depot. after going one mile we camped. the pickets had a little skirmish this evening.
16th Moved forward this morning 4 miles and found the enemy 40000 strong under Genl Pemberton at Champion Hill at which place was fought the hardest battle of the Southwest. Our forces advanced in the following order. Harvey and Crocker on the right Osterhaus and Carrs in the center Smith & Blair on the right. charges were made on both sides. The battle raged fiercly until 4 P.M. when we succeeded in routing them. a running fight was kept up until after dark. we
