Hall diary

five days rations started for Port Gibson arriving near there at daylight. May 1st found the enemy strongly posted at Thompson's Hill com'ded by Genl Bowen. after a severe fight which lasted until night we routed them capturing about 1000 prisoners and some artilery & killing the rebel Genl Tracy. the enemy retreated toward Raymond. we follow after them. have some little skirmishes with their rear. we arrive within 5 miles of Edward Station on the 12th, and McPherson Corps which was on another road met the enemy near Raymond and gave them a severe thrashing.
13th We marched toward Raymond arriving there at 3 A.M. of the 14th having marched 20 miles.
14th To day Sherman and McPherson Corps. had a fight at Jackson and capture the city and a large lot of prisoners and munitions of war.
