Hall diary

Vicksburg and the ram Queen of the West ran by the rebel Batteries going down to Red river and was captured by the rebels & afterwards destroyed by our gun boats. An expedition went via Yazoo Pass to Fort Pemberton on the Yall Busha [Yalabusha River] but failed to accomplish anything.
Mar 8th Our Brig embarked on steamers and went 15 miles up the river to Millikens Bend, La. and went into camp. we staid here 28 days. were paid off on the 18th and our Clothing bill settled up.
Apr 5th Marched to Richmond, La. 12 miles. Staid here 8 days.
13th Left Richmond and went to Smith's Plantation about 20 from Richmond and 3 from Carthage. on the night of the 17th several of our gun boats ran the Batteries of Vicksburg without any serious damage to them but one of the three transports that started with them was entirely
