Samuel Jacoby was born, raised, married, had children and died in Seneca Falls, New York. After his father re-married, some time before the war, Samuel was sent to live with his uncle near Dresden, Ohio. This is where Samuel was at the onset of the Civil War so he enlisted in Company K of the 16th Ohio, 90-day regiment, which was drawing men from the Dresden area. During the three months Samuel spent with the 16th OVI, he participated in the first Union troop movement into Confederate territory by crossing the Ohio River into what was then Virginia. He saw action around Grafton and Philippi but soon came down with illness, including the mumps and later the measles - all within his short three months enlistment. He survived his illnesses, mustered out with the regiment in August, 1861 at Columbus. He apparently moved back to Seneca Falls, New York, where he proceeded to enlist in the 50th New York Engineers regiment. (to be continued)...
