Details and photos provided by Sue Ramsey, great great granddaughter of William Winfield Scott

William Winfield Scott homesteaded in Crystal, Pawnee County, Oklahoma Territory in 1893--160 acres on the North West Quarter of Section No.Twenty-Two, in Township No. Twenty, North of Range No. Six East. The land consisted of prairie land & timber. He built an 18 x 22 ft. log home and out buildings. He used 60 acres to raise crops. With proof of his improvements to the land, he was granted the homestead in 1899.

In 1880 William applied for and received a pension (Appl. 399937, Cert. 664076). He suffered from an enlarged spleen probably the after effects of malaria or typhoid fever (he was hospitalized in July 1861 in Maryland with acute diarrhea) , heart problems, and rheumatism.

Upon his death in 1916, his widow, Mary, applied for & received a widow's pension (Appl. 1086573, Cert. 864533)

Note: His gravestone is marked with the wrong year of death. It says 1918 and it should be 1916. The pension file from NARA and local legal documents verified the correct death year.
