and standing picket.
" 31st A flag of truce went on the field to day and brought off the dead.
Jan 1st

Nothing transpired to day but picket firing at 10 P.M. we evacuated our position and returned to the fleet and embarked and moved down the river a few miles. The enemy made their appearance just as the troops had all embarked but the Gun boats soon put them to flight
" 2nd The fleet proceeded down the river to the Mississippi and up to Millikens Bend where we were joined by Genl. John A McClernand. a council of war was held on board the Forest Queen. the result was the planning of the expedition against
