Recruiting Poster
Web Author's Notes:
This recruiting poster published in Wooster, Ohio, and dated October 6, 1863, was used to entice men to join the military in the 16th Ohio Infantry. As with many regiments, the number of soldiers had dwindled, possibly to less than half of the original 1000 (or so) men. The regiment was actively seeking new recruits to replenish their ranks and offered them rather sizable sums of money to join up. At the time this recruiting event was happening in Wooster, the regiment was marching through the bayou country of southern Louisiana during Gen. Nathaniel Banks Second Bayou Teche Campaign.
