Web Author's Notes:
This is a photograph of Cumberland Gap while occupied by the Union Army between June 18 and September 17, 1862. The view is from the Tennessee side looking northwest from Powell's Valley. This is what the 16th Ohio and the rest of General Morgan's division saw on June 18, 1862, when they took possession of the gap after the Confederates abandoned it the night before and just two hours before Morgan's arrival. It is possible that soldiers or tents of the 16th Ohio are visible in this photo. This image also appeared in the transcript of the 26th reunion of the 16th OVI held at this very site on September 16, 1891. According to the Kentucky Historical Society, the white house in the lower, right corner, is the home of Dr. & Mrs. J. H. S. Morison and was used as occupational headquarters by Confederate Generals Zollicoffer, Bragg and Kirby Smith and Union Genls. Morgan, Burnside, Grant and Garfield. Interestingly, however, there seems to be no military activity or guard around the house in this photograph.
