of the 16th Ohio Volunteer Infantry
Brother Buries Brother At Young's Point, Louisiana
January 19, 1863
Web Author's Notes:
16th Ohio descendant, Elaine, tells us that Henry and Jacob served together in Company I. While the regiment was in winter camp, just north of Vicksburg, Mississippi, and after both had survived the regiment's bloodiest battle a few miles away at Chickasaw Bayou, on December 29, 1862, Jacob became ill on January 12. Older brother, Henry, was by his side when he died of fever on January 19, 1863. Henry tried to convince the military to allow him to take Jacob's body home to Ohio, but was not permitted. So, Henry buried brother Jacob in the yard of a private dwelling on the banks of the Mississippi, opposite the mouth of the Yazoo River, under the spreading branches of a tall tree. Jacob's parents and friends, back home, successfully retrieved his body and took it home to Reedsburg, Ohio, where he was buried among family and friends. Henry survived the war.
