Battle of Chickasaw Bayou - December 27 - 29, 1862
Confederate Military Letter Referencing Prisoners Taken at Battle
by Brig. General John Adams, C.S.A.
to Maj. R. W. Memminger, C.S.A.
Web Author's Notes:
Below is an early transcript of a letter from Confederate Brigadier General John Adams to a Major R. W. Memminger informing him of a group of United States officers that had been captured, most at the Battle of Chickasaw Bayou, and who were being transported to Richmond, Virginia. These prisoners would have been placed in Libby Prison and were positioned there to accommodate eventual prisoner exchange which would have taken place at nearby City Point, Virginia, which was under the control of U.S. forces. Thanks to Timm Stegg for providing this document during his research of Lt. Benjamin F. Heckert, Company C (90-day) and K (3 year), 16th OVI.
