BACK TO CAMP

The regiment's short mission to gather lumber and, perhaps, to probe the Confederate defenses and keep them in check, was now finished. They marched back to Indianola with wagon loads of the lumber, reaching camp about 3:00 pm. Pvt. Gorsuch notes the prairie was set on fire and that it was a beautiful sight.

Period map showing a notional route the 16th Ohio may have taken on its march into the Texas prairie and back. The blue line very roughly reflects 15 miles.
