SOUTH TO THE VERMILION RIVER - LT. COL. KERSHNER RETURNS

Early in the morning, about 3:00 am, Companies B and E, which had been marched to an unknown destination two days earlier, returned to the regiment. It was learned the two companies had been guarding a Catholic institution.

The regiment began its march at 6:00 am. They marched 13 miles enduring a light rain most of the day, and camping on the Vermilion River, south of Vermilionville, Louisiana.

Lt. Col. Philip Kershner rejoined the regiment in the night. Kershner had been taken prisoner at the Battle of Chickasaw Bayou on December 29 of the Previous year, having been gone ten months.
