This is an image of Adm. David Porter's fleet of gunboats moored along the bank of the Red River above the falls several miles above Alexandria. It took the engineering of Col. Joseph Bailey, under Gen. Nathaniel Banks, to build dams across the river at Alexandria to raise the water level enough to allow the fleet to escape downstream.
