This image is of one of several temporary bridges Gen. Ulysses Grant ordered built across the Big Black River immediately after the Confederates burned the railroad bridge while retreating after the Battle of Big Black River Bridge on May 17, 1863. It is believed this particular bridge is a pontoon bridge built some distance upstream from the battlefield.
